Driver/Material Handler
Job Description:

Basic Purpose:  Drive fork lift, chassis, truck, or pickup with trailer between facilities in Synder and Neligh, NE.  May need to make deliveries or pick up items in Omaha or surrounding areas.  Operate forklift and perform material handling duties in the Smeal Fire Apparatus Co. plant.

 

Daily Job Activities:

  • Unload freight and deliver parts to and from warehouse with forklift.
  • Use shop orders when moving parts, etc. from the warehouse to know where they should be delivered.
  • Maximum weight lifted:  75 lbs.  Minimum:  5 lbs.
  • Drive to Neligh as needed.

 Job Qualifications:

  • Must be able to locate components and prepare parts properly for shipment.
  • Must be able to locate components for delivery to various departments for use or storage.
  • Must be able to cycle count items as requested.
  • Must be able to track inventory and make adjustments or provide information for adjustments.
  • Must be able to operate forklifts and keep the warehouses in good order.
  • Must have above average knowledge of components that the different departments use and knowledge of where to deliver and stock them.
  • Must have high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have basic computer skills and an ability to learn the computerized inventory control system currently utilized at an accelerated rate.
  • Must have current CDL and a good driving record.
  • Must be a certified forklift operator.
  • Must be able to lift 75 lbs. and be in good physical condition.
  • Must be able to follow written and verbal Job Orders in English.
  • Willingness to work overtime as necessary.
  • Must be able to write clearly and keep records.

Electrical Designer
Job Description:

Basic Purpose: 

  • Provide electrical and electronics design for fire apparatus vehicles and components.
  • Provide electrical programming of electronic controls and assist shop personnel with the proper implementations of these controls.   

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design wire harnesses and schematics for custom built applications.
  • Supervise and work directly with production personnel.
  • Produce documentation while providing help on shop orders or component/system design for future reference as directed by Engineering supervision.
  • Carry out defined tasks to help the Smeal Fire Apparatus Company stay on the cutting edge of fire apparatus design (e.g. wiring harness improvements vs. multiplexing or electrical load monitoring systems); utilizing products or methods that are up-to-date and cost effective.  Recommend design improvements accordingly.
  • Become familiar with and support requirements of SFA's company management software (Made2Manage) as relating to engineering parameters, bills of material, etc.
  • Provide hands-on assistance to shop personnel for manufacture/assembly of products as appropriate where necessitated by complexity of projects or priorities for project goals.
  • Organize and maintain records of materials, drawings, spreadsheets, test results, job histories, etc. of projects for future reference.
  • Utilize a variety of software programs such as spreadsheets, databases, CAD programs, Windows, etc.    

Education, Experience, and Skills Required:

  • Minimum of an Associate degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering Technology is required and at least two years design experience with electrical/electronics components and/or systems.
  • CAD proficiency (preferably AutoCad R-14 or above); minimum two years experience with computer aided electrical design.
  • Must have understanding of both conventional and multiplex automotive electrical systems.
  • Organizational skills to make contributions to multiple simultaneous projects, supervised or without close supervision.
  • Ability to perform rigorous physical activities associated with checking, trouble shooting, or assisting with requirements of industrial manufacturing tasks on large equipment and in a noisy environment.
  • Must have supervisory experience and the ability to work directly with production personnel.

Sales Administrator
Job Description:
Serve as a liaison between the in house Sales and Engineering personnel and regional dealer network.  Must provide administrative assistance to Sales Directors and oversight on specifications, order entry and change order information to ensure accuracy, completeness and consistency with standard designs, options and/or Special Pricing.  Applicants should possess minimum of an associates degree plus two years experience in Marketing and/or Sales, and be familiar with industrial products and/or truck chassis mounted equipment.  Basic understanding of fire truck product knowledge is helpful.  Must be able to operate all Microsoft office products, have excellent math skills, be able to communicate clearly and have organizational skills to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Job Description:

Basic Purpose:  Prepare and paint truck body and component parts.

 

Daily Job Activities:

·        Prepare truck for application:  Fill holes with bondo and sand, use air hose to clear excess debris, use tac cloth to remove any excess debris.

·        Prime the apparatus and caulk any cracks.  Sand primer if needed. 

·        Paint the apparatus with paint gun (weight 1.5 lbs.). 

·        Clean paint gun using a sharp object.

·        Spray Line-X in compartments.

·        Most work is performed on ground level, some climbing required.

 

Essential Functions for Applicator:

·        Must be able to follow written and verbal work orders and instructions in English.

·        Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and be in good physical condition.

·        Must follow all company policy and procedures as stated in the company policy and safety manual including wearing safety glasses, ear protection, and steel toed shoes.

·        Must be able to work in a noisy environment.

·        Willingness to work overtime or during breaks and lunches as needed.

·        Must develop full knowledge of all aspects of this field and be capable of operating all related equipment pertaining to the position and be able to perform all assigned tasks within specific time limits and company standards.

·        Must exhibit a thorough knowledge of the companies product line to guarantee efficiency.

·        Must have operating knowledge of the equipment and materials to perform this task, as well as the setup and minor repair of the equipment

·        Must be able to do the task with little or no rework or supervision.

·        Must be able to plan work schedules so work can be completed in an order that reduces the time in building a unit.

·        Must actively pursue cost reduction measures through method improvement and time studies.

·        Must be trained in fire apparatus, as well as aerial ladder painting.

·        Must maintain coating appearance within standard.

·        Must cross train in sanding-buffing.

·        Must have knowledge of preparation of substrates prior to applying coatings.

 

Potential Job Hazards:

·        Air quality.  Wear respirator and dust mask during application and when sanding primer. 

·        Chemicals.  Know MSDS and HMIS.  Wear appropriate clothing and protection.  Wash hands well after using solvents.

·        Falls.  Make sure that all ladders and step stools are used correctly and for their designed purpose.

·        Heat.  Wear appropriate clothing and protection.

·        Repetitive motion.  Must have good arm and wrist strength when using paint gun.  Side-to-side and up and down motions used.

·        Associates degree in Autobody or extensive experience in vehicle coating required.

Job Description:

Basic Purpose:  Perform mechanical design to provide CAD drawings and Bills of Materials of fire apparatus vehicles and components.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

·        Under supervision of a Design Specialist, interpret customer specifications and perform design work to create drawings and bills of materials for components and body assemblies to meet these specifications.  This includes making bid prints, approval drawings, layout drawings, and detail drawings as required by various phases of a typical sales order or of development of a new product.

·        Interpret customer specifications form Sales Department; design bodies and components meeting specifications, and create SFA shop instructions/drawings for shop orders.

·        Support Engineering Department progress to complete approval prints and engineering design phases of the shop order for timely release of the order to Production.  Expedite handling of the change orders as need arises in responsible manner.

·        Perform tolerance studies and accuracy checks to ensure design output is correct and thorough.

·        Through knowledge gained of technical features of Smeal product lines, e.g. weight implications, pump/chassis/tank relationships and compartment design constraints, efficiently create designs towards goals of achieving quality and controlling costs of fabrication and manufacture.

·        Support customer service functions of SFA as assigned to resolve mechanical system concerns by working with Production and Material Control personnel as required by individual cases.  Produce documentation while providing help on sales orders or products for future reference in s/o files.

·        As opportunity allows for contact with our dealers/customers and with vendors, become familiar with products or methods that are up-to-date and cost effective.  Recommend design improvements accordingly.  Justify your recommendations with and appropriate analysis of cost or labor savings.

·        To the extent defined by Engineering Supervision, become familiar with and support requirements of SFA's company management software (Made2Manage) as relating to engineering parameters, bills of material, etc.

·        Provide hands-on assistance to shop personnel for manufacture/assembly of products as appropriate where necessitated by complexity of projects or priorities for project goals.

·        Under direction of Engineering Supervisor, organize and maintain records of materials, drawings, spreadsheets, test results, job histories, etc. of projects for future reference.

·        Follow written and verbal work orders and instructions in English, including all company policies and procedures documented in SFA Policy and Safety Manuals.

·        Perform other duties as may be assigned.

          

Education, Experience, and Skills Required:

·        Minimum of an associate's degree in a mechanical design discipline or equivalent through design experience with mechanical machinery or components.

·        CAD proficiency (preferably AutoCad R-13 or above); minimum two years experience with computer aided mechanical design.

·        Solid Works proficiency (preferably 1 or more years of daily experience).  Willing to train if employee has a good working knowledge of the program. 

·        Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Products (primarily Excel, Access and Word).

·        Familiarity with mechanical or automotive systems and components through work experience.

·        Organizational skills to carry out more than one task simultaneously with only limited supervision.

·        Ability to perform rigorous physical activities associated with checking, trouble shooting, collecting data and information in the shop, or otherwise assisting with requirements of industrial manufacturing tasks on large equipment and in a noisy environment.
